The Telephone Commercial Union Local 2213 was formed with the adoption of its Bylaws and Constitution in July of 1948. In 1949, the Alliance of Independent Telephone Unions was formed. This set the stage for National Bargaining with the Bell System. In 1975, the Alliance reorganized and became the Telecommunications International Union (TIU).
With the divestiture of AT&T also came the end of the TIU. All of the TIU Affiliates went out to seek the protection of the AFL-CIO by affiliating with one of its International Labor Organizations. In 1985, we engaged in an election process by secret ballot to affiliate with either the CWA or IBEW. The IBEW won and we affiliated in December 1, 1985. Since then the bargaining with our new company took on a different look and consisted of Regional and Local issues. The Regional items consist of common issues to both CWA and IBEW (e.g. S&S, wages, health care, pensions). The local issues deal with vacations, work schedules death in the family, grievance and arbitration to name a few.
